      By inviting both sides, you force a more complete examination and protect yourself from one-sided reasoning.

  2. Anchoring bias

    Anchoring happens when you give one number, idea, or scenario too much influence. Once you anchor the model on a value, it orients all following reasoning around that anchor.

    • Biased prompt:

      “We want to grow revenue by 50 percent next year. Suggest a plan to reach 50 percent growth.”

      The number is treated as a fixed anchor. The model will work hard to hit the target instead of asking whether it is realistic.

    • More robust prompt:

      “Our current revenue is X. Management has suggested a target of 50 percent growth next year. Analyse whether this target is realistic based on typical growth rates in our industry, and propose a range of achievable scenarios with strategies for each.”

      Here you tell the model to question the anchor and to introduce a range rather than treating a single number as a given.

  3. Vagueness bias

    Sometimes people avoid being specific because they are unsure, or because defining the problem feels uncomfortable. This leads to prompts that are open ended and unclear, which makes the AI output equally unfocused.

    • Vague prompt:

      “Tell me how to improve the business.”

      The model has no constraints, no time frame, and no definition of “improve.” It will generate long, generic advice that applies to any company.

    • Precise alternative:

      “You are advising a small service company with 12 employees and stable revenue but low profitability. Suggest three ways to improve net profit within 12 months without hiring new staff. Present the suggestions in order of impact.”

      The second version reduces vagueness and gives the model a clear frame in which to think, which produces advice that is more concrete and usable.

  4. Optimism bias

    Optimism bias appears when you only ask for best case outcomes and never invite risk, failure, or constraints into the conversation. AI will mirror this optimism and skip over important dangers.

    • Biased prompt:

      “Show how launching this new product will increase our market share and profits.”

      This assumes success and instructs the model to justify it.

    • Balanced prompt:

      “Evaluate the potential benefits and risks of launching this new product. Include possible upside in revenue and market share, but also outline the main operational, financial, and regulatory risks.”

      By including both benefit and risk explicitly, you encourage the model to operate more like a cautious advisor rather than a cheerleader.

Designing Prompts That Counter Bias

You can actively design prompts that force balanced reasoning and reduce the impact of your own bias. Small changes in wording can shift the entire analysis.

Instead of asking:

“Explain why this campaign will succeed.”

you can ask:

“List three reasons this campaign could succeed and three reasons it could fail. Then provide a short judgment on how likely overall success is, based on those factors.”

This single change does several important things:

  • It signals that both success and failure are acceptable topics.
  • It encourages comparison instead of one direction reasoning.
  • It produces output that you can use in a real discussion or risk review, not just in a pitch.

You can also add explicit anti bias instructions, for example:

“Assess this proposal from both a supportive and a critical perspective. First argue in favour of it. Then argue against it. Finally, give a balanced conclusion that weighs both sides.”

or

“Identify any assumptions that this plan depends on. For each assumption, rate how uncertain it is and describe what might happen if it turns out to be wrong.”

Prompts of this kind help you step outside your own frame. They make the AI a partner in de-biasing your thinking instead of amplifying your initial viewpoint.

Practical Habits To Reduce Bias in Prompting

To keep your own biases in check, you can adopt a few simple habits when writing prompts:

  1. Ask for the opposite view

    After a positive analysis, follow up with:

    “Now take the opposite position and critique this.”

  2. Invite uncertainty

    Add instructions such as:

    “If the evidence for any point is weak, say so and explain why.”

  3. Separate analysis from recommendation

    First ask for neutral analysis, then for advice. This keeps the descriptive phase cleaner and makes the final recommendation more transparent.

There are three pillars that help you build that kind of trust.

1. Verification before reliance

Before you base an important decision on an AI output, you should always ask a simple question:

“If this answer is wrong, what is the cost”

For low risk tasks (brainstorming ideas, drafting a first version of text), you can accept more uncertainty. For high risk tasks (legal wording, medical implications, financial commitments), you must treat AI as a supporting tool, not as a final authority.

Practical habits:

  • Cross check facts with reliable external sources, especially numbers, legal references, and names.
  • Compare multiple runs of the same prompt. If the answers change dramatically, treat them as ideas to investigate, not conclusions to adopt.
  • Use human expertise as the final filter. The more sensitive the context, the more firmly the final decision should sit with a trained professional.

Over time, you will get a sense for where a given system is strong and where it is unreliable. That pattern recognition is the real foundation of trust.

Useful prompts include:

When you request step based reasoning, you gain several advantages:

  • You can inspect the logic, not just the final sentence.
  • You can spot weak links, such as unjustified assumptions or missing data.
  • You can correct specific steps, which improves the next round of prompting.

For example, if an AI suggests a strategy for entering a new market, you might follow up with:

“Explain which data, trends, or examples you used to support this strategy. If any of them are uncertain or indirect, point that out clearly.”

This transforms the system from a black box into something closer to a transparent analyst. It also makes it easier to explain AI supported decisions to colleagues, regulators, or clients.

3. Using reflection prompts to calibrate reliability

Reflection prompts help you understand not only what the AI answered, but how stable and cautious that answer is. Instead of accepting the first draft, you can ask the system to self examine its output.

Examples:

4. Teaching AI Empathy Through Framing

AI does not experience feelings, concern, or care. However, it can produce language that resembles empathy when you give it the right instructions. That simulated empathy is highly valuable in practice, especially in roles that involve communication, education, customer support, coaching, or leadership.

The key concept here is framing. Framing means describing the situation in human terms and telling the model how you want it to respond emotionally, not only what you want it to say. When you shape the frame carefully, the AI aligns its tone, structure, and word choice with the emotional needs of the reader.

Compare these two instructions:

  • “Tell the customer we cannot give a refund.”
  • “Write a compassionate message to a customer explaining why a refund is not possible. Acknowledge their frustration, show understanding, and offer a practical next step.”

The first prompt contains only the business outcome: no refund. The second prompt contains the emotional brief as well: compassion, acknowledgment, and a forward path. The model follows the pattern in your words. Because you have embedded empathy in the instructions, the response tends to sound respectful, calm, and reassuring.

You can apply the same idea in many contexts:

  • Education
    • Cold prompt: “Tell the student they failed the exam.”
    • Framed prompt: “Write a supportive message to a student who did not pass the exam. Recognise their effort, explain what went wrong in clear terms, and suggest three concrete steps they can take to improve next time.”
  • Performance feedback
    • Cold prompt: “Give negative feedback to an employee about missed deadlines.”
    • Framed prompt: “Draft constructive feedback for an employee who has missed several deadlines. Recognise their strengths, explain the impact of the delays, and invite them into a collaborative plan to improve.”
  • Healthcare communication
    • Cold prompt: “Explain that the treatment is delayed.”
    • Framed prompt: “Write a clear and gentle message to a patient explaining that their treatment will be delayed. Acknowledge that this may cause worry, explain the reason in simple language, and indicate what support is available in the meantime.”

In each case, the factual content is similar, but the framing shapes the emotional experience. You are not only instructing the AI about what to say, you are defining how it should sound and how the reader should feel when they receive the message.

A practical checklist when you want empathetic output:

  1. Name the audience clearly
    • “A frustrated customer”, “a worried parent”, “a junior colleague who made a mistake”.
  2. Name the emotional state
    • “They may feel disappointed, anxious, or unfairly treated.”
  3. State the communication goal
    • “Preserve trust”, “reassure them”, “encourage learning rather than blame”.
  4. Give explicit tone instructions
    • “Use calm, respectful, and compassionate language.”
    • “Sound professional and kind, not overly casual.”
  5. Ask for structure that supports empathy
    • For example:
      • Acknowledge their feeling.
      • Explain the situation clearly.
      • Offer options or next steps.

You can even make that explicit inside the prompt:

“Structure the message in three parts:

  1. Acknowledge their feelings,
  2. Explain the constraints clearly,
  3. Offer a constructive next step.”

It is important to remember that this kind of empathy is synthetic. The AI does not care about the person on the other side of the screen. You, as the human operator, provide the care through your framing. The model simply learns to express that care in words.

For that reason, empathetic prompting always requires human oversight. You should read the final message and ask yourself:

  • Does this feel dignified and respectful
  • Does it match the culture and values of my organisation
  • Would I be comfortable receiving this message in the same situation

If the answer is yes, then your framing has translated human empathy into clear, considerate language. If the answer is no, you adjust the prompt and try again. Over time, you build a repertoire of empathetic prompt patterns that you can reuse across many situations, while keeping genuine human judgment at the centre.

5. Prompting as Dialogue, Not Command

Prompting works best when you treat it as a conversation rather than a one sided instruction. A professional AI user does not simply issue orders, they engage in a guided dialogue where both sides contribute. The human brings goals, context, and judgment. The AI brings speed, pattern recognition, and suggestions. When you frame the interaction as collaboration, you unlock better thinking, more accurate results, and often ideas you would not have reached alone.

If you only use imperative prompts such as

“Write a business plan.”

you force the model to guess your context, your constraints, and your expectations. It will produce a generic answer that may look polished but does not truly belong to your situation. A small change in phrasing can transform that interaction.

For example:

“Let us develop a business plan together.

Start by outlining the sections we will need for a typical plan.

Then ask me questions to fill in any missing context about my company, market, and goals.”

In this version, you invite the AI into a process instead of a single task. You explicitly ask it to propose a structure, request clarification, and pause for your input. The model switches from one shot generator into interactive partner. It asks follow up questions, it checks assumptions, and it adapts its output to the information you provide.

You can use the same principle in many domains:

  • Strategy work
    • “Help me think through our expansion into a new market. Start by listing the key questions we should answer, then interview me one by one to gather the information before you propose a strategy.”
  • Learning and upskilling

Notice the pattern in these examples:

  1. You state that you will work together.
  2. You give the AI a process role, not only a content role.
  3. You give it permission to ask questions.
  4. You keep yourself in the loop as the decision maker.

This approach has several advantages. It helps the AI collect the right context instead of guessing. It reduces the risk of confident but irrelevant answers. 6. Mental Models: How to Think Like an AI (Without Losing Humanity)

When an AI system generates a response, it does not look for truth in the way a human does. It calculates what is most probable given the patterns it has seen during training. In simple terms, it predicts which word, phrase, or structure is most likely to come next. It does not know whether something is meaningful, ethical, or strategically wise. The more precise you are about audience, length, purpose, and tone, the closer the output will match what you actually need.

High quality work rarely appears in a single attempt, and this is true with AI as well. Instead of asking for a finished product immediately, build in layers. First ask for an outline, then ask for a detailed draft, then request revisions for tone, clarity, or length. This step by step approach is easier to control and easier to correct. Iteration turns a single interaction into a structured process, where every cycle improves both the output and your understanding of how to direct the system.

An ethical AI will follow the instructions you give it without moral judgment. Your prompts define the boundaries of its behaviour. That means ethical responsibility remains entirely human. When you design prompts, consider privacy, fairness, safety, and the downstream impact of the results. Avoid instructions that encourage manipulation, concealment, or misuse of data. In a professional context, this mindset is not only a personal choice, it is a requirement for trust from colleagues, clients, and regulators.
